Social behavior

Night-bird.  Leads a solitary lifestyle.  In the daytime, it hides on a tree branch, while resembling a dry twig.

Reproduction

In clutch there are 2-6 shiny white eggs weighing 15 g each. Eggs are laid with an interval of

1-3 days.  The incubation period lasts approximately 25 days.  Incubation begins with the laying of the first egg.  Only female incubates.  The male, on the other hand, actively protects the nest and brings food to the female 10–15 times per night.

Species and people

Scops owls can live next to humans in city parks and squares, but the destruction of hollow trees deprives them of their nesting sites.  In Ukraine, the number has decreased many times.  The main reason is the decrease in the number of large insects.

Interesting Facts

They prefer to feed chicks with large caterpillars.
