  • The area is the steppe and desert regions of Eurasia: from the Danube valley, the Black Sea region and the Anatolian peninsula in the west to the Amur region in the east.

In India, roody shelducks are called "Brahminy duck" for the similarity of color with the color of the clothes of brahmins.


Social behavior


In the nesting season, roody shelducks are territorial, mercilessly expel all unwanted neighbors, the male is very active. On wintering grounds, roody shelducks form significant accumulations, reaching several thousand individuals. At this time, they calmly relate to the neighborhood of other birds.


Reproduction


Oviposition in April-May. The female lays 1 egg per day, so it takes about two weeks to lay eggs. Clutch contains 10 eggs on average. The female begins to incubate densely, after laying the last egg, incubation lasts about 27-30 days. While the female is incubating, the male is nearby, vigilantly guarding the family.


Species and people


This is a rare species. However, thanks to the protection of the population of the roody shelducks, it is possible to increase. For example, in the reserve "Askania-Nova" for this purpose, they arranged artificial nests, broke ice on ponds for constant access of birds to water, fed them, used foster parents to raise chicks.


Interesting Facts


Roody shelducks nest in flocks not on the ground, but in holes and hollows.

For the Buddhists of Central and East Asia, the fire is a sacred bird.
