Since the founding of Kharkiv Zoo, at different times, nine elephants have lived here. Some came to us from distant countries, others were born in Ukraine. Now in our zoo lives the elephant Aung Nain Lei, who arrived in Ukraine in 2002 as part of the IIP (EEP) Asian Elephant, the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums for the conservation and breeding of rare and endangered species of animals. The elephant moved to our zoo with one condition that the zoo undertakes to significantly improve the conditions for keeping elephants by 2013. Unfortunately, we failed to fulfill our obligations on time, and the participation of Kharkiv Zoo in the EEP Asian Elephant program was suspended.
After a large-scale reconstruction, a truly unique complex called "The Kingdom of Elephants" appeared in our zoo and became the largest exposition object of the zoo, there is enough space for a comfortable stay of 4-5 elephants. Spacious buildings with large aviaries, trees and swimming pools - everything is provided for a comfortable and interesting life of giants. The EEP Asian Elephant Program Committee considered the application of Kharkiv Zoo to restore the status of a program participant, and it was approved after a visit to the zoo by a program representative from the Netherlands. Our modern Kharkiv Zoo has become one step closer to the dream and is ready to host several Asian elephants!
