Mario Hodeimaker, a mentor of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums on improving the performance and achievement of EAZA standards by zoos from Amersfoort Zoo in the Netherlands, visited Kharkiv Zoo. This is his first visit since the opening of the renovated zoo.
Mario got acquainted with the completed locations of the zoo, and also met with the secretary of Kharkiv city council Ihor Terekhov.
Gradually, the zoo's collection will be replenished with many species of animals that are part of the herdbook and rare animal breeding program: hippopotamus, elephants, Amur leopard, chimpanzees, orangutans, polar bears, tapirs, some types of giraffes and various types of birds. And the penguins should be arriving soon. “For 60 years of my work, I have visited about 100 zoos. And your zoo is probably the best in Eastern Europe. Its level is very high, safety and comfort issues worked out very well. Several years ago I first saw the drawings of Kharkiv Zoo before the reconstruction. But I never imagined that you would realize all these ideas to life so well. I fell in love with Kharkiv Zoo,” noted Mario Hodeimaker.
