Return to the wild
15 September 2020

Every spring in the zoo they begin to bring owlets found within the Kharkov region and allegedly "abandoned by their parents". In fact, parents can leave their children for a while and go in search of food, so often people can find an owlet sitting on a branch or even on the ground, seemingly completely alone. Many people, seeing a helpless owlet that cannot fly, think that he is abandoned and take him home or to the zoo.

Of course, we cannot refuse and not accept owls, since only an adult can be returned to the wild. Owls are nocturnal birds of prey, so their diet at the zoo consists of meat, mice and rats. If the bird does not have any health problems, then an adult owl returns back to the wild, in fact, to the place from which it was removed by man.

The most numerous representative of the detachment in our country and Europe is a long-eared owl. You can meet her both in the mountains and on the plains. Nests in forests, usually in old nests, less often in hollows, sometimes right within the city. As one of the most useful birds in agriculture, it deserves protection and protection. Eared owls are especially valuable because in winter, gathering in large flocks, they destroy a huge number of rodents on agricultural land.

This situation develops not only with owls, but also with other birds. Fledged or wounded, 8 kestrels and 2 buzzards were brought to our zoo. These are birds of prey and in a healthy state they will not allow themselves to be taken in their arms. Therefore, it is not uncommon for people to find such a bird that it is under stress or exhausted, because it has suffered from a lack of food for a long time. Thanks to the efforts of the keepers, now the birds are healthy, they have reached sexual maturity, they have the necessary skills and are ready for life in the wild.

Today, the staff of the Kharkov Zoo went to the national natural park "Gomolshanskiy forests" in order to return the birds to the wild. The territory of the national park is rich in flora and fauna, in the forest you can find wild boars, roe deer, deer, elk, a large variety of birds and insects, and of course, eared owls, kestrels and buzzards, so we expect that birds will quickly adapt to new conditions. The birds endured the road well and set off to conquer new horizons with great pleasure and interest.
