Rare Animals are Breeding in Kharkov Zoo

Our nurselings have again brought youngsters. This time Corsac foxes became happy parents. Our family had two cubs. The new-borns were covered with light brown hair. Their eyes opened at the fourth day of their lives. It is notable that usually both parents care after the young. The father gets food for his growing-up cubs and also he takes care about their upbringing. When cubs grow up in such integral family, this leads to almost 100% survival of the young.

The state of new-borns was stable, still the parents' behaviour was queer. They did not show any care towards their cubs, on the contrary, they were agressive towards them. That's why the Zoo workers placed the young to a separate enclosure and started taking care of them. Now the young Corsac foxes, male Lenya and female Monya, have become bigger and stronge. They have got excellent appetite. Their diet consists of meat (chicken, veal), cottage cheese, eggs. The youngsters are cheerful, active and tender. They like communication and they excite great admiration when they wag their little tails.

For your information. Corsac fox looks like a common fox but the size of its body is considerably smaller (the length of its body is 50-60cm, the length of its tail is 25-35 cm). Its ears are quite large. Its legs are shorter in comparison to its body than those of a fox. Corsac fox inhabits steppe, semi-steppe and some area of deserts of South-Eastern Europe and Asia. This species is included into the Redbook of Ukraine and Red lists of IUCN.  The only existing wild population of Corsac foxes in our country consists of about 20 individuals. Their habitat area is situated in the east of Ukraine.
