Kharkov. Winter. Birds

In Winter birds especially need human help. It is not easy to find food inder a thick layer of snow, however, during this period birds need to take better food and to have it more often. Maximum of energy is spent for maintaining of body temperature (small birds' body temperature is about 45 degrees). That's why frosts put additional stress load on birds because they spend more energy to warm up their bodies, less energy is left for searching for food. Humans are the only hope.

But regular feeding does not mean filling the feeder every morning and every evening. You might choose any comfortable time gap and feed the birds several times a week or at least on weekend. It is even bad to keep the feeder full all the time as birds need to preserve their skills of finding food by themselves.

The best food are sunseeds, coleseeds, flaxseeds. Blue-tits easily feed on seeds in shells. For other birds it is better to facilitate feeding by preliminary squeezing the seeds with a bottle. Seeds need to be raw. Also you may add some millets into the feeder. It is useful to store sees of watermelons, melons, pumpkins and squashes, blue-tits like them very much. Hard-boiled chapped egg will be good for insect-eating birds that remain or stay in the city for Winter. But you should not give groats to birds because it is poorly digested (only pigeons can have it). Rye bread with yeast is not allowed as it causes gastric fermentation. Bakery products, especially sweet, are not good. And, of course, you should not give spoilt or moldy food to birds.

Feeder should have a roof so that seeds might not fly away with the wind or get covered with snow. Boards should not be sharp. Everything else depends on your phantasy, you might make a feeder out of a plastic bottle, a carton milk package or even of a small pumpkin.
