Day of Bison in the USA

American Bison used to be widely spread in the North America. In the end of the 19th century it was almost totally destroyed. The main reason of mass slaughter was that the US government desired to deprive Indian population of their main living source and thus "free" the prairies from 250 000 of aborygenous population.

Statistics says that in 1800 the population number of bisons was about 30-40. By the end of the 19th century there was less than one thousand. At present about 30000 bisons live in various national reserves, about 15000 are considered to live in the wild. On this day there are organized many events in America that underline the importance of bisons as the symbol of North American continent. Indian tribes used to worship bisons as holy animals.
