The beginning of July was marked by quite an outstanding event. It is for the first time that Hindu lotus is coming out in Kharkov Zoo. Nurslings of the Buddhism sacred flower were planted in the pond with pelicans in 2012. Many investigators of Slobozhansky region state that these stunning flowers used to decorate the ponds od Kharkov region. They stand cold winter well; still they like long hot summer. That’s why the cultural organization “The Sources” tried to return the former beauty to our ponds. So they made a trip to Taman to find lotus plants there. They fetched nurslings and planted them in ponds of Kharkov region. Natalya and Sergey Orlovsky presented Kharkov Zoo with several nurslings. Now, two years later, our pond has been decorated with a bright spark of floral kingdom.

This perennial plant grows in the zone of moderate climate as well as in tropical and sub-tropical zones of Eurasia. Multitudinous plantations of this arresting flower are grown in India, China and Indo-China. The only place in Europe where you can admire bright splashes of lotus colours is the estuary of Volga (Caspian Sea region).
