23 July, the International Day of Dolphins and Whales

The 23rd of July if the International Day of Whales. This event was established in 1986 when the International Whaler Committee prohibited whaling after 200 years of unsparing killing. This prohibition stays in power until now; whaling and whale meat trade are prohibited also.

However, this day is not dedicated only to whale protection but also to all sea mammals' protection. Each year on this day various animal protection groups organize events to protect whales and other sea mammals. Sometimes ecologists come together and dedicate this day to protection of some unique endangered species.
